Frequently Asked Questions

GENERAL

What is Colocation Hosting?
Colocation (also "colo", "co-location" or "collocation") is used to mean the provisioning of physical space for a customer's telecomminications equipment (such as a web server) on the service provider's premises. Providers usually include network connectivity and power with the space.

What are the benefits of server colocation?
The overall benefit of having your server colocated in a datacenter is maximum uptime. Server uptime is increased when a datacenter has redundant power feeds, multiple internet connections and AC/humidity controlled environments.

Where is your data centre located?
Our data centre is located inside 151 Front Street West, Toronto, Canada.

What if I need physical access to my equipment?
We provide 24/7/365 escorted access to our data centre. Visits must be booked 24 hours in advance. We also provide emergency access at a higher rate as well as a lower rate when we already have a tech on site (call for hours).

MIGRATION

What do I need to do to prepare my server for colocation?
You should have your server's network settings configured for our network when it arrives. Ideally, your server should also be rackmountable with front and rear mounts or rails (our racks are four-post.) Otherwise, we may be able to stack a limited number of non-mounted servers. We reserve the right to charge customer a non-refundable fee of $75 for a shelf if server is not rackmountable.

What is a Transition Server?
Upon receiving your first month's payment, we can provide you with the use of a Transition Server for 30 days at no charge in order to eliminate downtime during your move to our data centre. Specifications of such server will depend our availability of equipment.

Can we ship our server to you?
Absolutely. We recommend double-boxing your equipment and purchasing adequate insurance. We also advise shipping with signature-required. Upon arrival of your package, we will inspect the equipment for damage before accepting it.

SERVICES

What is remote reboot?
We utilize APC Masterswitch power distribution units in our data centre. These devices provide each of our customers with their own password protected web page that allows for their server to be rebooted remotely. So in the event of a machine lock-up you will be able to restart it without intervention from our support staff.

What is the difference between Premium Bandwidth and Value Bandwidth?
Our Premium Bandwidth gives you local peering with providers such as Bell, Rogers, Telus and Cogeco. International traffic travels through Tier 1 providers such as MCI, Level 3 and Teleglobe, just to name a few. Value Bandwidth is provided by Cogent and comes with no network uptime guarantee.

All of our Colocation packages include Premium Bandwidth. If you are looking for a more economical solution, we can include Value Bandwidth at a discounted price.

BILLING

Do you offer a discount for pre-payment?
Yes, 3% on quarterly payment, 5% on semi-annual payment and 10% on annual payment.

When are payments due?
Depending on when you move in, your monthly billing cycle will start on either the 1st or the 15th of each month. Payment is due at the beginning of your billing period. Any technical support or overages are charged to your next bill.

How do you measure bandwidth?
Burstable billing is a method of measuring bandwidth based on peak utilization. It also allows usage to exceed a specified threshold for brief periods of time without the financial penalty of purchasing a higher Committed Information Rate (CIR, "commitment") from an Internet service provider (ISP). We use a five minute sampling and 95% utilization when calculating usage.

Bandwidth is measured (or sampled) from the switch or router and recorded in a log file. At the end of the month, the samples are sorted from highest to lowest, and the top 5% (which equal to approximately 36 hours of a 30-day billing cycle) of data is thrown away. The next highest measurement becomes the 'billable utilization' for the month.

Based on this model, the top 36 hours (top 5% of 720 hours) of peak traffic is not taken into account when billed for an entire month. Bandwidth could be utilized at a higher rate for up to 65 min a day with no financial penalty.
